Mandarin/Nat Chinese President Jiang Zemin has urged Chinese leaders to push new economic reforms that critics fear will usher in privatization and weaken state control over the economy. Opening the 15th Communist Party Congress in Beijing on Friday, Jiang gave no hints of loosening the Communist Party's hold on the government and military. He also repeated offers to hold talks with Taiwan on ending hostilities, but threatened to use force if the island claims independence. The party congress, held once every five years to allocate choice posts to the powerful and map out policies, is Jiang's first without his mentor, Deng Xiaoping, who died in February. Whether he can manoeuvre supporters into powerful jobs will be a key indication of his power. More than 2-thousand party members listened to Jiang's two and a quarter-hour speech inside the cavernous Great Hall of the People. Jiang's speech bore the hallmarks of his campaign to secure his position at the head of the party's collective leadership. His endorsement of bolder reforms to cure ailing state industries appealed to liberals, his hard line on social order and corruption to conservatives, and his threat of force against Taiwan to the military. Jiang also sought to cast himself as Deng's heir, praising him as the pragmatic architect of China's rise to prosperity. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "The issue of the (Communist Party) flag is very important. The flag is the direction, the flag is the image, the unshakeable structure of the party line of the 11th Communist Party congress, third session, 11th plenary, upholding Deng Xiao-ping's theory unswervingly. After Deng Xiao-ping's death, the whole party should attach a high degree of consciousness and firmness to this issue." SUPER CAPTION: Jiang Zemin, Chinese President and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Most of Jiang's speech concerned new cures for ailing state-run enterprises. As expected, he called for more mergers and bankruptcies and, most controversially, issuing stock. He said the state would maintain control of important industries by retaining a majority stake and refuted criticisms that share holding would lead to privatization, capitalism and loss of state power. Jiang also admitted that shaking up the state-run sector, which employs the lion's share of the urban labour force, would lead to large-scale layoffs. But he said in the long run the economy and the workers would be better off. Jiang's recommendations mark a further retreat from the party's roots as the vanguard of the working class and its insistence on control through ownership. But the party has little choice - nearly half of all state enterprises are unprofitable and labour unrest is already on the rise. Jiang acknowledged the problems the party must face in shaking up enterprises and retaining popular support - corruption, waste, fraud and diverging incomes between haves and have-nots. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) SUPER CAPTION: Jiang Zemin, Chinese President and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party He pledged more prosperity and continued efforts to fight official graft coupled with firm resistance to challengers to party rule. In keeping with that tone, Jiang gave only a lukewarm endorsement of political reforms. He called for streamlining the bureaucracy and maintaining the modest elections for village heads already in progress in some rural areas. Democracy campaigners and some party members in the past few weeks have warned that neglect of political reform threatens to undermine economic success. But Jiang's allies in the past two weeks have sought to dampen expectations of immediate changes. Director's words: This is probably the first documentary in China about crossdressing. Originally commissioned by a channel on youku.com (Chinese domestic “youtube”), it failed to pass the “Chinese-style” censorship, and therefore could not be screened on the official channel. Now the director can only upload the film onto the internet on behalf of himself, hoping more and more people could see it, so that the social civilization and progress could be promoted in China and everywhere else. If a boy likes to dress up as a girl, does he wish to become a woman completely? Is his sexual orientation male or female? And what is the psychology of the person in love him?…What characteristics are considered female / male? What is a macho/feminine woman like? What deeds are decent / vulgar? What behaviors are normal / abnormal? ... It is very easy to mix up the idea of crossdressing with those who are/desire to be transgender/transexuals. In fact, 1) what gender a person likes to dress up as; 2) what gender a person identifies him/herself as; 3) what gender is this person’s sexual orientation, these three things are not necessarily related. So they can have all sorts of mix and matches on various people. It is important to spread out this knowledge in any society. When we know enough, we are more understanding and will show less unnecessary surprise or concern over certain things. The subject of this documentary arouses great curiosity by nature, but we might find the final film almost plain: no heartbreaking hardship, no breathtaking spectacles, and no tear-jerking sensations. This is actually the most beautiful and relieving state, because what we see is not a so-called “marginalized” person and his pathetic/provocative life, who/which echoes some cliche tags we already know and hope to put on such topics. He is very much just another ordinary person, who you can often meet on the street or in the subway and pay no extra attention: He got his own job, love relationship, entertainment, wishes, merits, weakness, happiness and sorrow. He rents a small room in the capital of China and lives his life day by day with his own style and pace. Mumu, this young boy who just moved to Beijing at the end of his adolescence, has just started to pursue his “special” hobby and work “special” jobs, and still has that bright clear smile and heart. I documented in a calm, warm, honest, sunny, matter-of-fact way, in order to long for a truly diverse and inclusive society, in which people are happily living together in harmony, any “peculiar” people almost lose the necessity to be documented, and everyone can gladly embrace their own "harmless" “strange” hobbies, being able to freely express that in appropriate ways in a laid-back society without shame, and there will always be someone loving and supporting them. I also wish there could be a utopia, where people do not have to do something they don’t really like just to make a living. Mumu’s story is showing us so many restrictions, dislocation, entanglement and struggles imposed on all humans by the current nature, era, society and life. We are concerned about where Mumu is heading in his life and give all our blessings. While for our own life, we can only try to “see it as it is and to love it”, through the reference/reflection of the endless compelling stories of other humans like this one, wishing we could gradually get rid of various cages and move more freely, just like Mumu and Dandan’s pet ferret.

Mandarin/Nat China's government is playing up its achievements of the past five years in the run-up to Friday's 15th Communist Party Congress. A tightly-controlled exhibition has opened in the capital, Beijing, featuring China's view of the nation's progress since the last party congress in 1992. The display, entitled "A Glorious Five Years," promotes the Chinese Communist Party as providers of economic growth and social stability. This relic of China's early Communist era is playing host to a more modern exhibition. The Beijing Exhibition Hall is the site of "A Glorious Five Years" - a display designed to reinforce popular faith in the nation's progress since 1992. The exhibition is being timed to coincide with the 15th Communist Party Congress, which opens in Beijing on Friday. The Party Congress will set the nation's agenda for the next five years and choose the members of the party's Standing Committee - considered to be the very top of Party power. Far from the stoic, bombastic exhibitions of the past, this one is packaged like a trade show to make its point that the Communist Party's leadership is a service worth signing up for. The exhibition is filled with interactive displays giving out information about the progress that each of China's provinces, autonomous regions, and cities have made in the last five years. Figuring prominently in this marketing scheme is President Jiang Zemin. In many ways, this year's Party Congress is Jiang's show - just two months after Hong Kong's return to China and the first since the death of Jiang's mentor, Deng Xiaoping, in February. Should Jiang persuade the Congress to endorse his reform programme and manoeuvre his supporters into key positions, he will strengthen his position in the collective leadership. The president would like China's people to believe that he is the direct political descendant of both People's Republic founder Mao Zedong and reform architect Deng Xiaoping. Unlike his predecessors, Jiang is not a veteran of China's Communist revolution and has no military experience. Yet while he may be China's leader, he works with a collective leadership which includes Premier Li Peng and Vice-Premier Zhu Rongji - something Mao and Deng never did. However, Jiang's invocation of Deng's name and legacy have convinced many that economic reform will continue under him. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "Comrade Jiang Zemin is the core of the third generation of leadership. This was a great achievement of Deng Xiaoping's to transfer leadership in a way that will not change the country. Under Jiang Zemin's leadership, our country will grow stronger and wealthier, and people's lives will be happier and more beautiful." SUPER CAPTION: Zhong Hanqing, 62, physician Not all the attention focuses on Jiang. Also highlighted is Vice-Premier Zhu, whom many Western analysts believe will be named Premier when Li's ten-year term comes to an end in March 1998. The display featured some attractions that seem more appropriate for an amusement park than a patriotic exhibit. The rides and interactively of the displays are just plain fun for some visitors, regardless of its intent or content. However, the exhibition does make one point clear and that is China has adopted foreign advertising methods to get its message across. In the past, leaders spoke and the citizens fell into line. But like the economic reforms that continue to change China, the nation's leaders now realise that they, too, can use a little packaging and good public relations to deliver their message. "중국국제항공, 베이징-평양 노선 다음달 5일 운항 재개" Air China will reportedly resume flights between Beijing and Pyongyang next month, despite earlier reports that the route had been suspended. With more on this and other news in East Asia...we turn to Ro Aram... Aram... a couple of weeks ago we reported that the route had been quashed,... possibly as a kind of punishment for North Korea's nuclear and missile tests. Now it turns out flights will resume... what's the deal? Well Mark... Japan's Kyodo News reported on Monday that Air China will resume Beijing-Pyongyang flights starting from next Friday,... May 5th. Earlier this month, the Chinese airliner was said to have suspended its flights between the two cities indefinitely. The announcement was made by China's state-run CCTV and came shortly after Beijing's Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned of possible conflict on the Korean peninsula. However, Air China later clarified it was only cutting back regular services due to reduced demand and that it was not halting the service all together. This latest report by Kyodo, however, suggests that the airliner will be getting back to its routine service between Beijing and Pyongyang, but this time with a different schedule. The route opened in 2008 and recently operated flights every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. From May 5th, Kyodo reports that the flight schedule will change to every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We are still awaiting details on what prompted the sudden U-turn.

I’ve got the Janes if you’ve got the Hooch As far as nightlife goes, Beijing can party with the best of the big international metropoles. So it’s kind of a big deal to emerge in the top the echelon of the mixology lounge scene as Jane and Hooch has. Owner Warren Pang (a cocktail superstar in his own right) has slung a lot of perfectly balanced cocktails to earn the position of top bar in town several years running. Rather than getting fancy with complicated mixology, Warren and his staff focus on getting the classics right with high quality ingredients that don’t mask the taste of the base. The inspiration for the bar’s décor and general ambience is a unique mix of Melbourne warmth (Pang hails from Australia) and prohibition era cool. It’s a departure from the flashy on the outside, little substance on the inside style of many other Beijing bars. The focus is simple – good drinks, great service and an upbeat, comfortable vibe – and the crowd is special – sophisticated, tasteful and one that is ex-pat friendly without being an ex-pat bar. Not to mention, the atmosphere lends itself well to warm rendezvous and the downstairs is non-smoking, which is always a welcomed change of pace in Beijing. Air China was established and commenced operations on 1 July 1988 as a result of the Chinese government's decision in late 1987 to split the operating divisions of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) into six separate airlines: Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, China Northern, China Southwest, and China Northwest. Air China was given chief responsibility for intercontinental flights and took over the CAAC's long haul aircraft (Boeing 747s, 767s, and 707s) and routes. Air China is the flag carrier of the People's Republic of China, and one of largest airline in the region. Air China's flight operations are based in Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). In 2013, the airline carried 51 million domestic and international passengers with an average load factor of 81%. I recently had the pleasure to experience the inflight services with this Skytrax rated 3-star airline on Flight CA938 from London Heathrow Airport to Beijing Capital Airport.
